Rents forced down by glut of homes
A flood of unsellable homes has forced down rental prices as homeowners instead turn to renting their properties, according to the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (Rics).
Economic View: The world's authorities must recognise the eastward shift in financial power
If you want one measure of the shift in global power, consider this: all the economic growth that will take place next year is forecast to come from the emerging economies, not from the present developed world. This point hangs over the Group of 20 meeting in Washington this weekend, a group that includes the main developing countries as well as the old developed ones. If you want growth, you won't find it here.
'I used my City skills to become a highly efficient house husband'
These days, working for an investment bank is akin to being labelled a child molester. Bankers walk around in public with their heads bowed to avoid meeting new people and facing that dreaded question:"So, what line of business are you in?"
David Prosser: Deflation is scary. So too is a policymaker in a blind panic
Outlook Here's a thought about the terrifying spectre of deflation now looming large if the much bigger than expected fall in inflation seen last month is a taste of things to come. It may not be so terrifying.

The mission impossible to keep HBOS independent
Victory for the Scottish National Party (SNP) at the Glenrothes by-election was to have been the springboard for two fiercely patriotic Scottish grandees, Sir George Mathewson, formerly the chief executive at Royal Bank of Scotland, and Sir Peter Burt, who filled the same role at Bank of Scotland in the 1990s, to begin their campaign to wrestle Halifax Bank of Scotland (HBOS) from the clutches of Lloyds TSB.
Is this the end of the mega bonus?
With banks going into the remuneration-setting period for 2009, having a chief executive forgoing their bonus seems to be the new black for this year's Christmas party season. But banks and other City institutions will continue to try paying bonuses to their other staff and management, although they should not expect much next year.

Microsoft hope as Yahoo's Yang steps down

David Prosser: Europe is unravelling but the ECB still doesn't quite get it
Outlook:One by one, Europe's economies are tumbling into recession. Ireland went first, to be followed on Thursday by Germany. Yesterday, Italy joined the party – or should that be w ake?– with the effect that the eurozone as a whole also plunged into a technical recession, recording its second successive quarter of negative GDP growth. To the list you can add Spain and, of course, Britain, both of which have revealed negative third-quarter numbers and are certain to double up in the fourth quarter. Of the major European Union economies, only France reported a positive GDP figure for the three months to the end of September, but that may be a statistical oddity, buoyed as the French were by unexpectedly resilient – and almost certainly temporary – consumer spending.
