David Prosser: It's not how big the bonus is, but how you hand it out

Wouldn't it be lovely to characterise the decision by Goldman Sachs executives to give up their bonuses as a triumph for the millions of mere mortals who have been enraged by the staggering awards paid to investment bankers? Would that it were so, but the reality of the Goldman affair is more spin than substance.

David Prosser: New Star no longer shines so brightly

Outlook:There are two ways to read yesterday's announcement from New Star that it has renegotiated its £236m debt at the cost of an additional 1.5 percentage points of interest each year, landing it with an extra £22m annual payment. Optimists will take heart from the categorical rejection of rumours doing the rounds in recent months that the asset manager was close to breaching its banking covenants. And the 9.25 per cent that New Star's creditors will henceforth receive is not generous compared to the cost of some financial service companies' debts (one imagines that Barclays, for example, would fancy a bit of that).

Market Report: Debt fears weigh on Johnston Press

The Regional newspaper publisher Johnston Press lost more than 19 per cent of its value last night after analysts at Teathers said that a covenant breach looked "likely" in light of new assumptions about the impact of the current advertising slowdown.

Barclays board to seek re-election in funds row

Barclays' entire board will stand for re-election next year to let shareholders pass judgement on a controversial £7bn capital raising that would dilute existing investors and leave Middle East funds owning almost a third of the bank.

David Prosser: Europe is unravelling but the ECB still doesn't quite get it

Outlook:One by one, Europe's economies are tumbling into recession. Ireland went first, to be followed on Thursday by Germany. Yesterday, Italy joined the party – or should that be w ake?– with the effect that the eurozone as a whole also plunged into a technical recession, recording its second successive quarter of negative GDP growth. To the list you can add Spain and, of course, Britain, both of which have revealed negative third-quarter numbers and are certain to double up in the fourth quarter. Of the major European Union economies, only France reported a positive GDP figure for the three months to the end of September, but that may be a statistical oddity, buoyed as the French were by unexpectedly resilient – and almost certainly temporary – consumer spending.

Leaders united by desire to avoid repeat of credit crisis

The leaders of the G20 most powerful nations gathered in Washington last night to plan a new era of international co-operation aimed at preventing a repeat of the financial crisis that has engulfed the global economy.
